Non-medical masks are often homemade of breathable fabrics or are commercially available to purchase. There are numerous designs for fabric masks, but they all generally cover the nose and mouth, are secured with ties or elastic loops, include multiple layers of fabric, and can sometimes be washed and re-used.

According to the WHO, the evidence about the benefits of these masks is limited. Overall, in one study [1], various non-medical face masks were shown to have very low filter efficiency (2% to 38%)
